Phil Thompson today paid tribute to injured star Martin Skrtel and hailed the influence of the 23-year-old defender on the Reds defence.
Skrtel faces up to three months on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage at Manchester City last weekend - and Thompson insists whoever gets the call to replace him will have a tough job to replicate the form of the Slovakian stopper.
"I just love Skrtel," said Thompson. "He has made a real impression at the club. People talk about Fernando Torres, but this lad could be a real gem.
"It's how he plays the game which impresses me. No matter if we're playing Stoke City or Manchester United, he gives everything he has in terms of commitment and passion. liverpool.
